Specialty Silicas Demand to exceed one billion pounds in 2008

Demand to exceed one billion pounds in 2008
US demand for specialty silicas is forecast to grow 5.1 percent per annum to over one billion pounds in 2008. Market value will advance to $1.5 billion due, in part, to rebounding nondurable goods production as well as across-theboard price increases, reflecting higher costs of production.

Expanded use of silica in new applications such as chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurries, high performance tire fillers and paper fillers will continue to drive growth. In addition, gains will be fueled by a general improvement in economic activity from recessionary levels of the early 2000s, which will directly benefit key end-use markets such as electronics, industrial rubber products and paper and textiles. Further gains will be restrained by competition from alternative materials in established markets, such as coatings and inks and foods and beverages.

Fumed silica to post most rapid gains
Precipitated silica will account for the greatest demand, spurred by favorable trends in the use of high performance tires. Development of advanced coupling silanes will allow tire producers to increase the content of silica in 乬green乭 tires, reducing rolling resistance and improving fuel economy. Overall economic improvement, especially in the manufacturing sector, will promote gains in precipitated silica used in non-tire rubber applications such as hoses and belts.

Fumed silica will exhibit the fastest growth. Advances will be propelled by robust growth in the market for CMP slurries as the electronic components industry begins to recover from recessionary levels in the early 2000s. Competition from lower cost silicas and new technologies in wafer polishing will restrain opportunities somewhat.

Future growth of key specialty silica markets will be dependent on the successful development of new products and applications. In precipitated silica, for example, the development of higher grade silica has been instrumental in the development of synthetic paper and faster laser jet papers. Production of highly dispersible silica has been a key factor in the growth of precipitated silica as a replacement to carbon black as rubber reinforcement in tires. Silica sol has been increasingly used as an abrasive in the fast-growing CMP slurry market. New techniques to produce aerogels more rapidly will open up new applications as production costs come down. Prospects for additional growth will be muted due to expansion of capacity, especially in Asia. Not only will export growth diminish but low cost imports, especially from China, will limit production growth.

Tire, non-tire uses to spur dominant rubber market
Rubber will remain the largest market for specialty silica in the US, accounting for nearly one-fifth of total specialty silica demand in 2008. Growth will be driven by above average gains in tire applications and, to a lesser extent, non-tire applications. Silica-reinforced tires are expected to continue penetrating the OEM market. In Europe, over 85 percent of OEM tires are high performance silica tires. In the US, silica tires have been primarily used in small trucks and SUVs to increase fuel economy.
